Indie Culture

Does anyone else think that pop culture is getting worse and worse, and Indie art is getting better and better. Maybe its because of the increase access of Indie music that I am just starting to figure this out, or maybe its because I am a moron that doesnt know what he is talking about.

I mean there has always been great art that went unnoticed until years and years later. Look at the Velvet Underground. They are considered to be one of the most influential bands these days, but back when they were around, they were playing for 80 people. I suppose time always does bring out the best stuff into a more mainstream light.

But thats why I love the internet. Because now we have everything at our disposal. You can hear the latest pop chart topper, or you can hear some schmuck recording folk songs in his basement like me. Except Im not even cool enough to have a basement.

Even in film too. Some of the best films Ive seen in the last couple years would be considered 'indie' films. Or stem from an Indie background.

I guess all I am trying to say is how great it is that we have all this at our disposal. Thats all.

Your thoughts?

I wish I could afford a soap-box.

And why are you summoning Jesus?

Indie does stand for "independant", so maybe that has some bearing on why indie music/films don't get as popular or mainstream as pop stuff.

I hate those people who label people who like indie music "indie kids".
Indie music is great stuff, not all of it, but the idea behind the entire genre is fascinating. I just appreciate the hard work and the usually unconventional nature of independent music and films. These artists are doing something new and different, not molding their creations to what will sell (sex and candy) or what is popular. POP

Am i on the soapbox now? I'd rather be on a milkcrate.

PS. Nick, you're music fits the indie scene because you are independent and doing something different. KUDOS!

Oh and this is a fun website for those interested in exploring the indie scene some more:

Yeah it makes sense that indie music isnt in the "pop" culture sense because it is independent.

But it is much more readily available these days, and is growing and growing and growing. I think that is a good thing. But it will only sprout some new genre that will be the new "indie", much like what happened to "punk" and "alternative" music as they grew in popularity.

Again, I have no idea what I am talking about ever.

The whole realm of art is generally moved by the "indie" people because the movers in the art world are generally ahead of their times. Whether it's music with the "indie" scene or the starving artist that can't eat the fruits of their labor because they die before it's appreciated - it's kind of the way art and culture always work.

Your appreciation for it is a new thing - whether simply because you are now producing art of your own and seek a new creative teet to suck on, or because you're simply just paying attention for the first time. Either way - it's not something new or something that really has changed in recent years. Or something that will change in the future. It is what it is.
